... of capturing - storing - the raw stream of h.264/mpeg2 hd movie data on your harddrive and editing it with any HD capable movie application, I would say yes.
But playback, no way, if it is 1080i/p material. For that you need a G5 with at least 2GHz just to be on the save side. 720p is possible without framedrops on any G4 faster than 1Ghz, I think, with lots of RAM included.
Encoding DV into h.264 is taking ages right now with pure processor speed, even in PC land.
E.g., I myself can capture mpeg2 transport streams from my cable tv via ethernet to my iBook G3 500 Mhz without any problems. I can edit it, store it, transfer it, but playback is always choppy as hell on that machine. Only if I transfer it to DVD, I get perfect playback, but only because Apples DVD player app does use hardware accelerated mpeg decoding from the graphic card.

I'm sure you don't want to hear this, but I think you're better off with an iMac or a mac mini with a nice IPS monitor. I understand that the mac pro is easier to expand, but if you plan on keeping it for 4 years you could buy a new mac mini every year and still come out the same.
I just saw this, and I have one point of contention- a Mac Pro can have multiple quad core processors- Minis have a single dual core processor. Depending on the type of photography you're doing, that can make a serious difference- for example, focus stacking, HDR and panoramas will all benefit from more cores. I mentally kick myself every single time I go to stitch a 20+ shot panorama because I "cheaped out" and only got a single QC processor in my Mac Pro.

Your site looks really good. I will keep my eye open to some potential clients and pass any work onto you.
I really like the picture of the day. Maybe you guys should make a submital form so that other people can submit their pictures and see if they end up as picture of the week.

Did you ever play "balderdash"? My favorite thing to do in school was to make up my own current events. They would be just weird enough to be interesting, but still plausible. Try it, it's fun. And if the teacher calls bs, just be like "I guess I just like to read outside of the mainstream media"...If that doens't work blame it on ThinkSecret or something.

Who's the prick downrating your posts...?!
A friend of mine runs a small animation business. He does lots of rendering, which is apparently extremely CPU-intensive. If that's what you'll be doing, as DG has said, the i7 might give you something extra. But if you're working on stills, I think the i5 is fine.
i have no idea, that's weird.
about the rendering, i'm not working with animation or 3D so there will be no rendering. maybe just a little video with After Effects but just from time to time.. i don't really use it on a regular basis.
and thanks for your quick reply

I think you mean translucent :p
Your right. I was more thinking about the process in making it translucent.
For some reason a translucent image is made by changing its "opacity"... I dunno why they don't call it "translucency" lol.

My experience has always been that they stop at the first issue. Then there can be a whole series of fixes, submissions, reviews, and rejections. Each iteration brings you closer to approval but never with any feel for how close you might be. But your mileage may vary.
So if one as 3 things wrong with the app, A, B, C. They would usually tell you A after the first submission. And then you fix A, and resubmit. And then they tell you B, and then you fix and resubmit... etc...

What kind of TV? The better the resolution, the hard the Mini will have to work to power it, the the worse it will look.
Does the TV has HDMI, DVI, VGA, Component, Composite or S-Video inputs?(Or if your out side of the US, I know there are a few other inputs, I just don't know there names)
Edit- I now see its an HDTV...what kind of HD? 720p, 1080i or 1080p? I'd go with HDMI, DVI or VGA(in that order) if your TV has those inputs

color keyboard just got an update (may4), and there are a LOT of choices.
different keyboards, even different 'pop-up' letters when you type
(some really nice ones, some really ugly ones too...:D ); even the option for custom backgrounds (which i haven't tried yet).
am loving having a black keyboard...

1)The who cares line...love it...great reply.
2)The nonsense you speak of is why Amazon is killing the iPad as an e-reader. Don't believe me? Go read the tens of thousands of comments about how hard it is to read a book (not a website....not an email...a book) on an iPad.
We have both an iPad 1 and Kindle. Absolutely no comparison for reading books...iPad just stinks.
Who said anything about fail? You need to ease up and stick to the comments otherwise you look like a fool. Too late I guess.
I am not sure that your premise is correct btw. Amazon has never told anyone if they sell more books on the hardware kindle or the iOS apps..Not even sure how they can measure since I have a kindle, 2 macs, a pc, an iPad, and an iPhone all on my kindle account.
One more point on this subject, I have never purchased an a book from Apple :) The Kindle store is obviously a better choice, no matter what device you have.

One of the other rumor sites (AppleInsider I think) is speculating that there is a secret announcement to be made today by Steve at the Final Cut Pro meeting.
Sounds like wishful thinking to me :(

If this is true I am going to do something I've never done before, and skip an iPhone version.
Don't do anything crazy.
seems like apple is using the same modus operandi "tick-tock" as intel :apple:
Intel must have copied it from Apple.

i am working on a Mac G5 that has a apparent hard drive issue. When I start the G5 it chimes and the Apple logo appears and the little wheel just spins and spins and never loads the OS. When i remove the hard drive and replace it and reboot the G5 i now get a blinking folder with a question mark. I tried several different replacement drives and get the same question mark icon. However, when i put the original hard drive back in I at least get the Apple logo and the spinning wheel..but still no OS loads......what up with dat...???

I have a friend with a similar machine where I think the graphics chip is getting flaky -- replacement logic boards are surprisingly expensive, though I found a couple places that will fix it mail-order for around $350 US. Apple might even fix it for around that price too. I'll be interested to see what you come up with.

I was able to get it working. Thanks for your instructions. Now I need to wait for TW to improve their service so I can actually get more than 5 secs of video stream. I would be very interested to know if anyone who has TW cable has been able to get this to work reliably.
I think your problem has more to do with low upload speed. Your upload is not fast enough to serve the video.
