An eleven-year-old boy in Northern California accidentally downloaded (http://www.necn.com/06/05/10/Boy-accidentally-downloads-99900-Smart-p/landing.html?blockID=247714) the $999.99 BarMax bar exam preparation application (iTunes link (http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/barmax-ca/id345722008?mt=8)) using an iPod touch. He didn't mean to make the purchase and was surprised when it started to download the 1GB app. His mother was equally shocked, especially after she learned the price and that her son had not been prompted for an iTunes password.
They paused the download and went to an Apple store but were told that the store couldn't help. However, the boy's mother then emailed Apple and received a return phone call telling her that they would receive a full refund.

a module for layout and one for word processing??? Please no!!!! To me that sounds more complex. If i want to type a document I just open a blank template. What is so difficult about that?
As far as i can tell Pages only lacks a few features to be a "fully fledged" word processor, such as;
Grammer checker (dubious value in my opinion)
indexing
Better mathematical notation input
Table of Contents is not bad but could have some additional features.
better cross referencing
Personally I dont mind the inspector.
I write specifications and pages is fine for that. I can see for academic works Pages may be a bit lacking

It surely can't be that hard to add support for T-Mobile's network to the iPhone. All you need are three thing:
a) Support for the 1700/2100MHz AWS frequency bands
b) Support for 3G
c) Putting it all together and adding it in.
The frequencies are already there. One part of the AWS frequency band is within the European 2100 MHz 3G band, which the iPhone already supports. The other part is within the 1800 MHz European GSM band, which the iPhone also already supports.
The support for 3G is already there, that goes without saying.
All you have to do is put them together (and that's already half done, see above) and make sure that it all works from an engineering point of view, then add a bit of software to support the extra capabilities, and you're there.

Purchase spare battery? Nice Apple nice. It may be a legit option, god knows its somewhat a PITA to find on apple's site, but still. I don't want to hear anyone complaining about MS's in OS ads.

Everyone keeps talking about the fact that their logitech and other mice have lasers but those are all RF mice. Correct me I am wrong, but I have NEVER seen a stand alone BT mouse with laser, (except for the DiNovo combo - but you can't buy them seperatel only optical. If it's true, than apple has another hit on their hands. Still don't know if I would buy one though.

Microsoft has waited WAY too long to make any type of impact on the portable music device industry. iPod has been around now for too long, and has too strong of a grip on the marketshare for anyone to try to threaten their hold. This Zune thing will have to have some aspect to it that is totally it's own for anyone to take any notice to it whatsoever.
I just set up a webpage where you can cast your vote for Zune or iPod. Check out www.will-zune-beat-ipod.com

As a Mac fan-boy I'd love to think Apple actually picked up sustainable market share, but as an actual technology product manager who does forecasts for a living, I've got to look askew at the data:
* Mac market share was DOWN the previous quarter
* The attributed cause of the share drop the previous quarter was the transition to Intel
* Therefore the previous quarter share drop represented pent-up demand that would rematerialize once the Intel transition stabilized
* Therefore one would expect a corresponding one-time blip UP in the corresponding quarter to resolve the pent-up demand
* And low and behold, the marketshare "increase" just about corresponds to the resolution of the previous quarter's pent-up demand.
In other words, to keep the same long-term share, the current quarter's share would have to temporarily rise to make-up for last quarter's drop.
Sorry, amigos, I'll wait to see next quarter's data before I pop the cork...

Increased market share can only be a good thing.
Most people I know however, who were using macs at uni or at work, have all switched back to windows in the last year or so and they are not looking back. I suppose marketshare in the UK is not in par with the US. It would be interesting to do a survey of this increased user base and discover the role of the mac platform as it has evolved these days.
I suppose my question is: Has the mac/osx platform changed direction towards its function and purpose? What is a mac with osx good for these days?
A few years back the mac was the platform of choice for the creative class such as designers, photographers, Video editors, etc. Most of these people, with the exception of video editors, have now switched to windows because of the better choice of software and better upgradeability.
the mac platform is still the choice for the creative class. you won't find more than a handful of print designers using windows. adobe/macromedia sales figures show just about 50/50. creative pros don't care one whit about upgradeability. final cut pro is absolutely devastating the film market right now, eating away at the market share of avid solutions. these are all factual and verifiable.
as for your anecdotal evidence of your friends switching back, i'm sure that has happened. i can anecdotally tell you two of my colleagues have switched recently, buying not one, but two laptops each (15" and 17"). thing is my anecdotal evidence is just as useless as yours, all that counts are cold hard numbers and 4.6 is greater than 3.2. clearly mac market share is on the rise.

Apple pays 70% straight to the record companies, which would be $0.90. If Amazon pays the same, then they have $0.21 loss before they even start. Or Amazon gets different prices than Apple, which would need some explaining.
My thoughts exactly. Reeks of collusion and I could see lawsuits flying over this.

I would expect better of this place than to take bait. I bet this is a false flag out there specifically to find security holes inside Apple. Does it let you rip and play BluRay disks too?

That may be, but could the new prices also be from a recent deal between Amazon and the content providers? Can't agreements be changed after a specified time? Also, what Amazon is selling is not the same as what Apple sells. The music is the same, but the format and delivery options are different; with Apple it is in AAC that can be converted to MP3, whereas Amazon sells just the MP3.
Sure, there are a number of reasons why Apple is offering product X at price Y and Amazon is offering product X at price Z. The only reason to start calling it collusion or saying the DoJ should look into it is if you irrationally hate every company that isn't Apple.

Katy Perry's "E.T.", Jennifer Lopez's "On the Floor" and Lady Gaga's "Born This Way."
If those are the songs Amazon is selling then Apple doesn't need to worry about losing my business. :D

Obama's speech was awesome
Very well spoken ... never hurts to remind those who may think that he was some bit player in Al-Queda
I am very happy that Bin Laden got what was coming to him ... we also need to continue the fight on terrorism

You're crazy. :) But one thing I would like to see is a free upgrade to iLife for everyone who upgrades Leopard. Or else some kind of Leopard / iLife buy-together discount. That would be most welcome.
rjf
Obviously we'd all like to get something for nothing, but as the newest OS and the newest iApps both come for free with every new Mac, the boxed versions are effectively upgrades and Apple would feel that they're offering them at reduced prices anyway compared to their full value.
But I'd love to be wrong on this.
Which reminds me. Every time I've bought an OS upgrade ( for as long as I can remember - probably back to OS 7 ) there has been a set of coupons included to prove that I purchased it. Has there ever been a scheme where customers actually get something in exchange for those coupons ?

According to CNET, the new Air will be released around June with a Sandy Bridge ULV Core i5 2537M chip 1.4 GHz that can turbo to 2.3 GHz.
So for .17 GHz upgrade we are sacrificing around 30% graphic power?
is this a new news or is it the same thing they posted early this month?

Ah, I completely forgot about PCI-Express based SSDs. I kept thinking about 6Gbps SATA SSDs.
Also, "SSD drive" is redundant :).
TB is basically PCIe + Display Port video.
Part of the discussion on expansion cards for Mac Pros was that, according to Intel, TB must have direct access to the PCIe lanes and the graphics processor. In theory, someone could come up with a PCIe graphics processor board with a TB controller, ports & etc, but the question will be whether there is a sufficiently large market for the device.
Whether a RAID array saturates TB or not, the bottom line is that TB is a great deal faster than even an eSATA connection. When will TB 2.0 come out? Who knows? Let's see how version 1.0 is adopted.
Cheers

I think it's best if Vista is avoided altogether. The best way to avoid problems with Microsoft is not to give them any money and not to load any of their software on your computer.
At work here we just discovered that upgrading to Internet Exploder 7 causes two of our most important Internet based products to not work properly. They ever heard about backwards compatibility or testing at Microsoft? Just reinforces my reasoning for not sending Microsoft almost $300 to subject myself to their newest software fiasco. I think I'll do something more rewarding and pleasurable like jab a Bic pen into the palm of my hand.
while it would be nice to live in a world where everything Microsoft made could easily be avoided, its certainly not the best solution at all for some people and their jobs/careers/etc. If you need compatibility with Windows, then you need it to get things done. XP will be fine for the vast majority of people right now, but eventually people are going to want to upgrade to Vista for a variety of reasons, and knowing that you'll have to re-boot to run vista for the lower-level versions is an issue. Microsoft isn't the best company, but we live in a world where their products are used by so many people that it can't be avoided.

wimax is not 4G. it even shows up with the wifi icon when it's connected. LTE is a real ITU standard that will eventually pave the way for real 4G
Exactly. It will take a long time to impliment and only the 2 major carriers will have it.

Most people with a mac also have ios devices, why not make it a bit more consistant?
Because it's INSANELY UGLY! That's why!!!
Is Steve even running the company anymore???? I mean... I know he's leaving the day to day stuff with others... But it looks like he's just gone.
The phrase Hell in a handbasket come to mind... Not really, but still.

Doesn't look terrible, but similar to the ipod (if that pic is legit). Competition is good though, because it'll stimulate new ideas and better products (hopefully). We'll see what happens, but I love my video ipod (as long as apple doesn't release a better one).
